Delbert Walther, 79, Virginia Beach, VA, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016, at home after experiencing declining health over several years.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 1, 2017, followed by procession to the Linton Cemetery and lunch at the United Methodist Church, Linton, open to friends and family.
Delbert was born in Linton, ND on January 4, 1937, the oldest son of Ted and Bertha (Renschler) Walther. He grew up in Emmonsburg and attended the local rural school.
Delbert enlisted in the US Navy shortly after his 17th birthday and retired after over 20 years of service. He then went on to work at a civilian position with the Navy at Norfolk, VA.
During his service with the US Navy, he served on every aircraft carrier that was in the fleet at that time. He spent most of his time in southeast Asia and on the West Coast (San Diego and Alameda, CA).
Delbert married Shizuko (Sue) Nirei on August 6, 1958. They have two daughters, Sandra May, born in 1962, and Deborah Sue, born in 1965. Both are married and live in the Virginia Beach area.
Delbert cherished his daughters and there wasn't anything he wouldn't do for them.
Delbert is survived by his wife, Sue; two daughters, Sandra and son-in-law, Robin, Deborah and son-in-law, Gregg; one brother, Dennis, Fairfield, CA and one sister, Linda Vollmer, Champlin, MN; one uncle, Herbert, Linton; two aunts, Etta, Kingston, WA and Marie, Indian Head PK, IL and many cousins, nieces, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Bertha Walther; brother-in-law, Gary Vollmer; and many uncles and aunts.
